MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides. A triglyceride is a type of fat, or lipid, found in your body that plays two main roles, triglycerides can be burned for energy, or stored as body fat.
Most fats such as those found in meats, olive oil, fish and avocado, are long-chain triglycerides. These longer and more complex triglycerides take a lot more time to be broken down by your body than the shorter, less complex MCTs. Medium-chain triglycerides can be broken down quite quickly and are therefore thought to be a useful energy source. It is thought that because MCTs can be turned into energy efficiently, it is less likely that they will be stored by your body as fat.
The best food sources of MCTs are coconut oil, palm kernel oil, whole milk, and butter.
Directions
Add 1 tablespoon to coffee, shakes, dressings or smoothies. Could also be added to salads and dressings.
