Also known as ‘Agua de Jamaica’, this popular drink is sold across Mexico, where an abundance of hibiscus plants line the roads. Hibiscus helps to ease coughs and colds and soothe sore throats. It’s also useful for treating cystitis and lowering blood pressure. When using for therapeutic purposes, aim to drink two or three cups daily for acute conditions.

  • 5 tbsp tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers

  • 1 l freshly boiled water

  • 2 tbsp to 4 raw honey or maple syrup

  • 1 lime, juiced


  1. Put the hibiscus flowers in a heatproof jug or container.

  2. Let the boiling water cool slightly, then add to the jug with 2 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup and lime juice. Infuse for at least an hour, or preferably overnight, in the fridge.

  3. Strain the flowers out and add more sweetener and lime juice, to taste.

  4. Drink cold
