Protect Your Prostate

Good nutrition could be the key to a healthy prostate, says Nutritional Therapist Sarah Brereton.

Prostate health is very important as men reach 40 years of age and onwards. The prostate gland can start to enlarge after middle age. When the prostate becomes enlarged, the condition is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is important to get regular GP check-ups for any changing symptoms or concerns you may have.

In Ireland BPH affects 40% of men in their 50s and 90% of men in their 80s. If the enlarged gland begins to press on the urethra and to interfere with urination, then treatment may be needed. The main symptoms of prostate enlargement are difficulty initiating a urine stream; a hesitant, interrupted, and weak stream; and urgency and leaking or dribbling. The good news is that a diet rich in certain vitamins and minerals can keep your prostate healthy and lower your risk for BPH. Being overweight is another risk factor for developing the condition. We will have a look at some particularly nutrients and food choices with many health benefits for prostate health which may also help to lower both your weight and your risk.

Foods to include in your diet

Certain fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, contain a powerful antioxidant called lycopene, antioxidant means it protects cells from damage. Other fruits include tomatoes, watermelon, apricots and pink grapefruit.

Interestingly, lycopene is tightly bound to the cell walls of raw tomatoes, so your body has trouble extracting it. Cooked or puréed tomato products may be better options. Try adding some sundried to salads. Eating salsa and enjoying tomato-based soups are excellent ways to boost your lycopene intake. Just make sure to include your lycopene-rich food with a fat like avocado, nuts, oil or butter to enhance absorption.

Green leafy vegetables are especially important because they are rich in antioxidants. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli may also reduce the risk of prostate problems.

Vitamin C, found in vegetables, may play a role in fighting prostate enlargement. Bell peppers contain a lot of vitamin C: one cup of raw bell peppers contains nearly 200% of your daily required intake of vitamin C.

Omega-3, found in salmon, is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, along with walnuts, ground flax seeds and chia seeds, and are important inflammatory agents for prostate health.

The mineral zinc is essential to the health of the prostate. Help your body by snacking on sesame seeds. Almonds, adzuki beans, and pumpkin seeds, which are also high in zinc and other nutrients and aid prostate health.

Also try to limit foods such as red meat and processed foods as these can cause and exacerbate inflammation.
