What is Hay Fever?

It’s that time of year again which those of you who suffer from hay fever dread. I know it’s a little early, but did you know that by starting early you may help reduce the impact that pollen has on your immune system and the histamine response? Which means your symptoms may not be as bad.

Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen. The pollen can enter the body through the nose, mouth and eyes. The pollen can be from grass, hay, flowers, weeds, or tree pollen. If you are sensitive to pollen from these various sources you may have symptoms all year round. Those of you who suffer with hay fever will be very familiar with the symptoms. This can include runny nose and eyes, itchy nose, eyes, or the roof of your mouth. Your nose and eyes can stream on exposure to the pollen, it looks like you have a head cold but you don't. Sneezing is another common symptom.

Supplements to help relieve hay fever

There are lots of supplements available to help with hay fever. For example,  A.Vogel Pollinosan hay fever remedy is one of our customers’ favourite supplements. It works best if you start taking it before the season starts, and should be taken throughout the hay fever season to reduce the effect of pollen and the resulting symptoms. Pollinosan Hay fever Tablets contain 7 tropical herbs. The great thing is that they are non-drowsy so will not affect your ability to drive or use machinery. Pollinosan can be used to help treat allergies to grass or tree pollen, as well as allergies to dust, animals and pets, and it is suitable for children over 12 years of age.

For younger children, you could try A.Vogel Luffa Complex. This is a tincture containing several herbal botanicals. It’s suitable from 2 years of age and upwards. The dosage is one drop per year of age, twice daily in a little water. I would start this before the season starts and continue throughout season for optimum benefit. Or, if you prefer, there’s the Hay Band, which is a drug free option and particularly good for young children, being suitable from age 3. The band is worn on the elbow and works like acupressure to relieve hay fever symptoms.

For extra support you can use A.Vogel Pollinosan Allergy Nasal Spray, which may be useful on very high pollen days. It’s used for treatment and prevention of symptoms associated with hay fever and allergic rhinitis, including runny or itchy nose, and nasal congestion.  It can help decongest the nose in a natural way and reduces the harmful influences of allergens. For children over two years of age, you can use one or two sprays into the nostrils several times per day. The spray can be used alongside the tablets and especially useful to take with you when travelling. You may be able to use it during pregnancy but do check with your medical practitioner to be sure.

Tips to help with hay fever

Other tips that might help can include wearing wrap around sun glasses to protect the eyes when out and about. Use Vaseline or Haymax Balm on the tip of the nostrils to prevent the pollens entering through the nose. Change your clothes after being outside, close the windows on high pollen count days. Some foods to support the body can include nettle or camomile tea, bee pollen, brightly coloured fruit and vegetables, onions , garlic, ginger, turmeric, oily fish, and local honey.

I hope that you will get some relief from your symptoms so that you can enjoy the summer like everyone else.
