How Happy is your Gut?
Have you ever finished a meal only to feel heavy, sluggish, or uncomfortable moments later? Or do you find that your mood fluctuates massively depending on how your stomach feels that day? If so, you are certainly not alone.
A healthy gut is one of the most important aspects of our overall health that we need to look after, yet it is often the one we neglect until it starts shouting at us. Thankfully, gut health is now widely recognised as the absolute foundation of good health. It is something I am very happy to see being talked about more openly, because for years, people suffered in silence with bloating, wind, and indigestion.
We often think of digestion as simply the mechanism that processes our food, but it is so much more than that. It is the engine room of the body and when your engine is running smoothly, you have energy, clarity, and vitality. When it is struggling, everything else seems to slow down.
So, let's take a look at why your gut matters, and what the enemies of healthy digestion are, and the natural, gentle solutions that I personally rely on to keep things moving comfortably.
Why Your Gut often called the Second Brain?
Before we look at how to fix digestive issues, it is important to understand just how hardworking your digestive system is. It's not just about avoiding a tummy ache.
Your gut plays a massive role in your daily energy production. If you aren't breaking down food efficiently, you aren't extracting the fuel your body needs to get through the day. This is why poor digestion often goes hand in hand with chronic fatigue or that mid afternoon slump.
However, one of the most fascinating connections is the link between your gut and your mood. Have you ever had a gut feeling or felt butterflies when you were nervous? That is the gut brain axis in action. Surprisingly, approximately 95% of the body's serotonin often called the happy hormone, is produced in the gut, not the brain. This means that the state of your digestive tract has a direct, powerful impact on your mental wellbeing and anxiety levels. A happy gut truly does make for a happy mind.
As well as that, a healthy gut is your first line of defence against illness. Approximately 70% of your immune system lives in the gut. The beneficial bacteria residing there communicate with immune cells, teaching them to distinguish between friend and foe. If your gut flora is out of balance, your immune system may become compromised, leaving you more susceptible to colds, flu, and infections.
What Are The Modern Enemies of Gut Health?
If the gut is so important, why do so many of us struggle with it? The reality is that modern life is quite harsh on our digestive systems. There are several key factors that can throw your delicate internal ecosystem off balance.
The Impact of Antibiotics
Antibiotics are life-saving medicines, and there is a time and place for them. However, they act like a forest fire in the gut. They are designed to kill bacteria, but they cannot distinguish between the bad infection-causing bacteria and the good beneficial bacteria that keep your digestion running smoothly.
When you take a course of antibiotics, it can wipe out a significant portion of your microbiome. This leaves you with a "clean slate," but not in a good way. Without the good bacteria to crowd them out, opportunistic bad bacteria and yeasts can overgrow. This often leaves people prone to recurring infections, thrush, or persistent digestive upset long after the antibiotic course has finished. If you have had to take antibiotics recently, rebuilding that gut flora is essential with a good quality probiotic/macrobiotic supplement.
The Stress Factor
This is huge. I cannot stress this enough. Stress is perhaps the single biggest disruptor of digestive health that I see in the store.
Your body has two main operating modes: the Sympathetic Nervous System, the fight or flight and the Parasympathetic Nervous System, rest and digest. When you are stressed-whether it's a looming deadline, traffic, or emotional worry-your body enters fight or flight. Physically, your body diverts blood flow away from the digestive organs and towards your muscles and heart, preparing you to run from a tiger.
When this happens, digestive enzyme production is stalled. Your stomach essentially shuts down. If you eat while you are stressed, your food sits there, fermenting rather than digesting. This leads to gas, bloating, and nutrient malabsorption. We simply cannot digest food properly when we are in a state of high alert.
3. Diet and Lifestyle Habits
It is not just what we eat, but how we eat. Excess sugar and highly processed foods feed the bad bacteria in the gut, leading to dysbiosis, an imbalance of gut flora. We live in a fast-paced world. Eating while driving, working, or walking means we aren't chewing properly. Digestion begins in the mouth; if you rush your food, you are forcing your stomach to do work it wasn't designed for. While hydration is vital, drinking large amounts of water or other fluids during a meal can dilute your digestive enzymes, making them less effective at breaking down food. It is often better to sip small amounts during meals and hydrate well between meals.
Symptoms of Imbalance
How do you know if your gut needs some extra support? Your body usually gives you clear signals. Symptoms of digestive imbalance can include:
- Persistent bloating after meals
- Constipation or sluggishness
- Diarrhoea or loose stools
- Food intolerances that seem to appear out of nowhere
- Flatulence and excessive wind
- Heartburn or acid reflux
- A feeling of heaviness that lasts for hours
- Nausea
- stomach cramps or pain
If you are nodding along to any of these, don't worry. A healthy diet and lifestyle, with the addition of some gentle herbal remedies, can make a world of difference.
Natural Solutions
I am a great believer in the power of herbs to gently nudge the body back into balance. Unlike harsh laxatives or chemical suppressants, herbs work with your body's natural rhythms. Here are the ones I reach for and recommend most often.
Soothing Herbal Teas
Sometimes, the simplest remedies are the most effective. Salus herbal teas are a staple in my cupboard because they are high quality and effective. Salus Peppermint Tea is my go-to for that horrible bloating feeling. Peppermint is an antispasmodic, meaning it helps to relax the muscles of the digestive tract. If you are suffering from cramping, bloating, or trapped wind, a warm cup of Salus Peppermint can provide almost instant relief. It allows the gas to release and the pain to subside.
Salus Aniseed, Fennel and Caraway is a classic digestive trio. These seeds are known as carminatives. They warm the digestive tract and support the natural production of digestive enzymes. I find this blend particularly comforting if you have general digestive discomfort or if you feel like your digestion is just a bit cold and slow. It's wonderful to sip after a heavy dinner.
The Power of Herbal Bitters
If I had to pick one product for digestive support that consistently gets rave reviews, it would be Salus Gallexier.
In modern diets, we have largely eliminated bitter foods. We tend to crave sweet, salty, and savoury flavours, but we avoid the bitter greens and roots that our ancestors ate. The problem is, the bitter taste on the tongue stimulates the vagus nerve, which tells the liver to produce bile.
Bile is essential for the digestion of fats and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K). If your bile flow is sluggish, eating a fatty meal will leave you feeling nauseous, heavy, and tired.
Salus Gallexier helps to stimulate this vital bile production. It supports liver and gallbladder function, making it particularly helpful for those who experience heaviness or discomfort after eating. I have had customers tell me it completely changed their relationship with food-they no longer fear that post-meal slump. I give it the thumbs up for anyone who feels like their digestion is just stuck.
Calming Support for the Gut
As we discussed earlier, you cannot digest well if you are stressed. Sometimes, the best way to fix your tummy is to fix your nerves.
If you are stressed, tired, and worn out, I would recommend Salus Neuro Balance. This is a beautiful liquid supplement that contains Vitamin C and B12 which are great for the nervous system, combined with Ashwagandha.
Ashwagandha is an adaptogen, which means it helps your body adapt to stress and find its equilibrium. It doesn't sedate you; it just takes the frantic edge off. This combination is ideal to aid relaxation so that you and your body can work in harmony together. When your mind is calm, your parasympathetic nervous system can kick in, allowing your digestion to function as it should.
Practical Lifestyle Tips for a Happy Gut
While these supplements are fantastic, they work best when paired with small, daily lifestyle changes. Here is my "How-To" guide for nurturing your gut:
Chew, Chew, Chew: I know it sounds simple, but try to chew each mouthful until it is liquid. This physically breaks down the food and signals your stomach to prepare acid.
Eat Mindfully, try to sit down at a table to eat. Put your phone away. Turn off the TV. Take a few deep breaths before you take your first bite. This switches your body into rest and digest mode.
Include prebiotic fibers in your diet like garlic, onions, leeks, and asparagus to feed your good bacteria. If you can tolerate them, fermented foods like sauerkraut or kefir are wonderful natural probiotics.
If you have persistent changes in bowel habits or severe pain, always get it checked by your GP to rule out any underlying issues.
Listen to Your Gut
Nurturing digestive health supports your energy, immunity, and mood, contributing to long term wellbeing. It isn't about being perfect; it's about making small daily choices to gently care for the gut. Over time, these small changes make a noticeable difference to your overall health.
If you are struggling with bloating, wind, or just that general feeling of being off, please don't suffer in silence.
