Minding Your Mind

Whole health– what is that exactly? Well, it’s a balance of physical, mental and spiritual health… but how are they linked and why do they matter? Let’s dive in.

If your physical health isn’t at an optimal level, this can affect your mental health and vice versa. Whether it’s that your energy levels are low because of poor dietary choices and a lack of exercise, or you are sleep deprived, your physical health can greatly impact your mental health.

Serotonin is the ‘happy hormone’ that is responsible for all feelings good and glorious and guess where it’s primarily made? Your gut.

Gut health plays a significant role in our overall health, so it’s essential to prioritise it.  Eating fresh, healthy food including fermented food and topping up with a probiotic supplement if needed. Udo’s Super 8 is my go-to probiotic, this can also help to keep your immune system strong and healthy, and can help energy production which in turn supports mental health.

We all know that stress depletes energy and affects mental health too, but it can be hard to avoid and, in some cases, hard to identify. You may not feel stressed while your body is under stress so sometimes you need to look at your diet and lifestyle to find areas you can improve. That isn’t always easy, but focus on the basics; sleep, movement, relaxation and nutrition; too much or too little of any of either can create stress within your body.

Supplements to help relaxation and anxiety

There are many supplements that you could consider to help support relaxation to help reduce anxiety. Here are some of our favourite ones.

A Vogel’s Passiflora Complex is excellent for relaxation and helping you to keep calm in nervous situations. You can choose from drops which combines Passiflora with the herb Avena Sativa also useful for helping lift the mood. I love that this particular remedy can be given to young children from age two. It is sad that someone so young could need such a remedy but great that nature provides us with help. Adults take twenty drops twice a day and children would take one drop per age, so a two year old would be given two drops twice a day. There is also A.Vogel Passiflora Spray for but is only suitable from age 12. This remedy also contains Lemon Balm and Zinc. It is a perfect handbag remedy and is ideal for situations that occur out of the blue as well as for ongoing stress and anxiety.

The Irish Brand Macanta have a fabulous combination L Theanine and L-Ornithine Complex it also includes lemon balm, and camomile. It helps to settle an over-active mind and get a satisfying sleep to tackle the day ahead. This is popular when sleep is a problem too.

Another option is Higher Nature Balance for Nerves which contains B Vitamins, Magnesium, Lemon Balm, Passion Flower, and L-Theanine. We have found this remedy excellent over the years for stressful and anxious situations. And in particular to help stressed students and parents before exams. It can help reduce stress and anxiety and can support sleep too. You can take this supplement twice per day if needed.

Ashwagandha is a popular choice for many people as it has countless health benefits. One Nutrition Ashwagandha is one of my favourite brands. It also contains some magnesium and zinc for additional health benefits. Ashwagandha is commonly used to help reduce stress levels, and to help the body deal with stress. With reduced stress, you may notice that you have better focus, memory and can think more clearly. It may have a calming effect on the body which can also help lead to better quality sleep. Use this daily for optimal results; best taken in the evening to help improve sleep and encourage relaxation and rejuvenation.
