Menopause can come with a wide variety of symptoms, so many in fact that you can think you are going crazy. Over the years it has been put to me that all of these symptoms cannot possibly be all attributed to the menopause. You can feel like a hypochondriac at times. But the truth is, they can all be associated with the peri-menopause. And this is because of the decline in estrogen levels and changes in other hormones as we age. I think we are hormonally challenged for half of our lives.
Common Menopause Symptoms
Hot flushes, increased anxiety, and low mood are such common symptoms some of you might think that if you don’t have these symptoms, then you are not going through the menopause. Certainly, 20 years ago when my journey began, there was little other symptoms talked about. I didn’t have hot flushes, night sweats, or low mood, but for the first time in my life at 40 years of age, social anxiety was something that I started to experience. I had brain fog, but I thought that that was because of Candida overgrowth. I did not realise 20 years ago that these symptoms were the beginning of the decline in estrogen and that was what was happening to me. It wasn’t until I was around 50 and there were changes in my cycle and I was having hot flushes that I started to consider menopause as it was called then.
Thankfully, today we know that declining estrogen can contribute to many of the symptoms that we now associate with peri-menopause. As well as hot flushes and night sweats, it can include aches and pains, concentration problems, insomnia, skin problems including itchy skin, low mood, irritability, anger, anxiety, and these are not all of the symptoms either. Many women find that a fog they feel in their brain is affecting their ability to perform well at home and at work. It can be surprising to learn that this may also be a symptom of the menopause. Hormonal changes may affect your physical, emotional, and mental health.
