Top tips to bounce back after Winter Illness

Are you feeling completely drained, exhausted, or worn out after a bout of the cold or flu? Perhaps you've recently battled a viral infection that has seemingly cleared up, yet it has left you feeling depleted of all your usual zest and energy.

We see this so often in the store. You've technically "recovered" the fever is gone, the cough has subsided, but you just don't feel like yourself yet. You might be waking up tired, dragging yourself through the workday, or finding that simple tasks feel like climbing a mountain. It can be incredibly frustrating to feel stuck in this "in-between" stage where you aren't sick enough to stay in bed, but you certainly aren't well enough to enjoy life.

If you are nodding your head right now, please know that you are not alone. Post viral fatigue is very common, and it is your body's way of telling you that the war may be over, but the rebuilding process has just begun. With a gentle approach to diet, lifestyle, and the right natural supports, you can help your body recharge and get back to your vibrant self.

Nurturing Your Body Through Food

When you were in the thick of being sick, you probably lost your appetite entirely. Or, perhaps out of necessity and exhaustion, you reached for the wrong kinds of foods-quick, processed comfort foods that were easy to grab but low on nutrition. That is completely understandable; when we are ill, we just want to survive the day.

However, now that you are ready to turn a corner, even small diet changes can make a massive difference. You don't need to overhaul your entire life overnight, but shifting your focus toward nutrient dense, restorative foods will help get you back on track.

Warming Soups and Stews

I always recommend leaning into warmth during recovery. In traditional natural health philosophies, warm foods are easier to digest, meaning your body doesn't have to expend extra energy breaking them down energy that can be used for healing instead.

Warm soups, stews, and casseroles are a brilliant way to nurture your tired body. They are essentially a hug in a bowl. I love making a big pot of vegetable broth loaded with root vegetables. You can pop in lots of vegetables, herbs, and spices to turn a simple meal into an immune boosting powerhouse.

Three ingredients I always have on hand for recovery cooking are:

Ginger is known for its warming properties, it helps support digestion and circulation.

The golden spice Turmeric is fantastic for inflammation. I like to add a pinch of black pepper with it to help absorption.

Garlic is amazing, not just for flavour; garlic has long been used for its immune supporting compounds.

Hydration is Key to Healing

It sounds simple, but are you drinking enough water? Dehydration can contribute significantly to feelings of fatigue and brain fog. Keep hydrated and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

If plain water doesn't appeal to you right now, herbal teas are a fantastic alternative. A simple infusion of ginger, lemon, and local honey is wonderful. The honey provides soothing comfort and a little energy, while the lemon offers a hit of Vitamin C.

Gentle Movement and Deep Rest

When you have been bedridden for a few days (or weeks), the idea of exercise might seem daunting-or conversely, you might be itching to get back to your high-intensity routine to "sweat it out."

I cannot stress this enough: take it slowly. Take your time. There is no rush.

When you are ready, getting back to exercise may help stimulate your energy, but start slowly. A gentle walk in the fresh air or some restorative yoga is perfect. If you feel dizzy or exhausted afterward, you've done too much. Recovery is a marathon, not a sprint.

Prioritising Sleep

Your sleep was probably disrupted while you were ill. Fevers, coughing, and congestion play havoc with our circadian rhythms. However, quality sleep is absolutely critical for immune health; it is when your body performs its deepest repair work.

If you are struggling to settle back into a rhythm, look at your bedtime routine. Are you winding down? If you need a little extra help, herbal teas that contain Chamomile and Lemon Balm are lovely, gentle options to calm the nervous system. There are also some excellent herbal supplements available that promote relaxation without leaving you groggy the next day.

Natural Support to Revitalise Your Energy

While food and rest are the foundations, sometimes our bodies need a more concentrated boost to bridge the gap between "exhausted" and "energised." There are many supplements that can help support energy and vitality.

I am delighted to share some of our customers' absolute favourites. These are the products we find ourselves recommending time and time again because we see the results they deliver.

 Strath Original a Traditional Tonic

If you are looking for a complete, all rounder to get you back on your feet, Strath Original is a fantastic choice. This is a traditional herbal yeast tonic that has been around for decades, and for good reason-it works.

I often describe Strath to customers as a vitality tonic that awakens the lifeforce energy of the body. It is produced using a unique process called plasmolysis, where herbal yeast is fed a mixture of herbs and then broken down. The result is that when you take it, a broad spectrum of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, and amino acids are released into the body in a form that is incredibly easy to recognize and absorb.

Why I love it:

It doesn't just provide nutrients; it actually helps to encourage the uptake of nutrients from the food that you eat, too. It makes your healthy diet work harder for you.

It is ideal for sustained energy and to gently support your immune system after illness without being over-stimulating.

One of the best things about Strath is its versatility. It is easily digested and absorbed and is suitable for all ages, from toddlers (who might be recovering from school bugs) to the elderly. It is also suitable during pregnancy.

How to use it: The liquid has a distinct, malty taste that many people grow to love. We generally recommend taking three teaspoons per day before meals. You can take it neat or mix it into a little juice. It is available in tablet form too.

Nature's Plus Source of Life Gold

For those who want a heavy-hitting multivitamin but hate swallowing large tablets, Nature's Plus Source of Life Gold is a game changer. This is often the "big gun" we recommend when someone feels completely depleted.

It is a liquid blend of nutrients sourced from a wide range of whole foods. Unlike synthetic vitamins created in a lab, this formula is derived from fruits, vegetables, algae, and mushrooms, providing a broad range of nutrients in their natural context.

What makes it special:

Liquid Energy: Because it is a liquid, it bypasses the need for the stomach to break down a hard tablet. It gets into your system quickly.

Green Superfoods: It is packed with energising greens like spirulina and wheatgrass, which are excellent for detoxification and rebuilding blood cells.

Comprehensive: It is designed specifically to support energy levels and immune recovery.

How to use it: It is a green liquid with a tropical fruit flavour (surprisingly tasty!). You simply take one capful per day. It's best to take it with a meal, perhaps breakfast, to set you up for the day. Remember to store the bottle in the fridge after you open it to keep those whole-food ingredients fresh.

3.  Udo's Choice Super 8 perfect after antibiotics

This is a crucial point that is often overlooked during recovery. Did you have to take an antibiotic for your illness?

While antibiotics are sometimes necessary and life-saving, they are not selective. They act like a forest fire, wiping out the bad bacteria causing the infection, but also destroying the beneficial bacteria in your gut. Since a huge portion of your immune system resides in your gut, this can leave you vulnerable to secondary infections and digestive issues.

Udo's Choice Super 8 Microbiotics (often referred to as probiotics) is a great option to replenish these good bacteria.

Why we recommend Super 8:

High Potency: It contains a very high count of viable bacteria (42 billion cells per capsule at time of manufacture), which is often needed after a course of antibiotics to really repopulate the gut flora.

Targeted Formula: It is formulated to support the upper bowel, helping to support immunity and digestion.

Mental Clarity: There is a strong connection between the gut and the brain. Many customers report that fixing their gut helps lift that "brain fog" that lingers after illness.

How to use it: Take one capsule daily on a full stomach. If you are currently taking antibiotics, be sure to take the probiotic at least two to three hours apart from the antibiotic dose.

A Note on Vitamin C and D

While the products above are our top picks for total body recovery, I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't mention the basics. If you aren't already taking a good Vitamin D supplement (especially during our long Irish winters!) and Vitamin C, now is the time to start. Vitamin C contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, while Vitamin D is vital for normal immune function.

Listen to Your Body

Recovery is not a linear process. You might have one great day followed by a day where you need a nap at 2 pm. That is perfectly normal. By nourishing your body with warm, wholesome foods, staying hydrated, prioritising sleep, and using intelligent supplementation to fill the gaps, you are giving your body the tools it needs to repair itself.
