Craving sweetness without the sugar crash? You’re not alone. As more of us look to cut back on added sugars from our diets, whether it's to steady energy levels, support weight goals, or simply feel better, nature offers an enticing variety of alternatives. From zero‑calorie botanical extracts like stevia and xylitol to nutrient‑rich whole‑food options such as dates, maple syrup, and coconut sugar, today’s sweeteners can satisfy the sweet tooth while delivering extra antioxidants, minerals, and fiber. In this blog, we’ll explore how these “sweet swaps” work in the body, what they taste like, and clever ways to use them in your everyday cooking and baking, so you can keep life delicious without sacrificing health.
Chicory Root Syrup:
According to the European Food Safety Authority eating foods containing oligofructose from chicory instead of other sugars induces a lower blood glucose rise. Chicory Root Syrup is a delicate syrup that’s extracted from fresh chicory roots and is a healthy way to bring natural sweetness to your favourite foods. Perfect for anyone monitoring sugar intake.
Date Syrup:
This deliciously rich, fruity dark syrup is made from 100% organically grown dates. Drizzle it over porridge, blend it into smoothies or swap it for refined sugar in baking to add trace minerals and flavour complexity, just remember it’s still about 70 % natural sugars, so moderation keeps the “healthy” in this sweet swap.
Oat Syrup:
Made by gently extracting the natural sugars locked inside organically grown oats with no refining, no additives, this golden syrup offers an easy, planet-friendly alternative to refined sugar or honey.
Rice Malt Syrup:
This delicious amber coloured syrup has a rich, mellow taste with a subtle caramel like flavour. Made by the malting of organic cereal grains, it retains their natural sweetness and characteristics. It is used in hot drinks, desserts and baking and a great alternative to refined sugar.
Agave Syrup:
Squeezed from Mexican agave plants, this mellow sweetener offers a healthy and natural alternative to sugar. Whisk this light syrup into cake batters or drizzle into desserts for rich sweetness. Alternatively add to hot drinks as a health conscious treat. Try a spoon in overnight oats to give you a slow release boost.
Maple Syrup:
Maple Syrup is a natural syrup, crafted from the finest maple trees in Canada. Renowned for its rich, smooth flavour and amber colour, this syrup is perfect for adding a touch of natural sweetness to pancakes, desserts, beverages, and more. Free from additives and preservatives, it’s a wholesome choice for those who value quality and authentic taste. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans, it’s a delicious way to enhance your favorite dishes naturally.
Molasses:
Molasses is a natural by product of the cane sugar refining process. All the nutrients from the sugar and its residue are extracted, leaving you with a rich, sweet molasses. It has a lower sugar content than any other sugar cane product and contains essential vitamins and minerals, such as calcium and potassium.
This unrefined syrup sweetener is perfect for baking, stirring into porridge and using in savoury cooking.
Coconut Sugar:
Coconut Sugar is a nutritious alternative to white sugar and artificial sweeteners. It is sustainably produced from Indonesian coconut flowers; the nectar is hand harvested by farmers and cooked until it crystallises. Coconut Sugar has a high mineral content, including potassium, copper and zinc. In addition, it has a low glycemic index (GI 35); it is not bleached, it is preservative free, has a gentle caramelised taste, is quite versatile, and can be used in the same quantity as normal white sugar.
Erythritol:
Erythritol is a zero calorie sugar replacement used to sweeten just about anything! Sprinkle over fruit and even bake with it just like sugar.
As part of the sugar alcohol family, Erythritol is a naturally derived extract from fruits and plants and passes straight through your body undigested. Therefore, erythritol does not affect blood glucose levels in most people and has zero net carbohydrates. This makes it the perfect sugar alternative for diabetics, low carb, keto, dieters and anyone reducing calories.
Powdered erythritol is a zero calorie icing sugar replacement. It is a very fine powder with a similar texture to icing sugar so it dissolves very quickly. It is ideal for recipes where faster dissolving and finer sugar is needed. It's perfect for icing sugar, ice cream, meringues and can also be used for any recipe just like the granulated erythritol.
Stevia:
Stevia is a plant grown in South America and its sweetness comes from something called steviol glycoside found in the leaves. It is up to 400 times sweeter than the main ingredient of refined sugar (sucrose) so you need a lot less of it. Many people are using it as an alternative to artificial sweeteners like aspartame as it is extracted from a plant rather than in a lab.It also contains little to no carbohydrates and doesn’t rapidly spike your blood sugar making it popular among those who have diabetes or poor blood sugar control. It is available in powder, granules, liquid and tablet form for convenient use in baking or to add to drinks.
Xylitol:
Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol extracted from birch trees and other hardwoods. Used in the same way as sugar, it is ideal for those who are monitoring their blood sugar levels. It is used in many natural products as it has been found to be beneficial for dental health, e.g. chewing gum, breath mints, toothpaste, mouthwash and certain sugar free foods. As xylitol has a low glycemic index, it is broken down more slowly which means it doesn’t cause a spike in blood sugar or insulin levels which may be useful in reducing sugar cravings. (Please note Xylitol is toxic to dogs and cats.)
If you want to introduce any sugar alternative into your diet, it is important to start slowly to avoid any digestive disruption. The advice is to use sparingly on a day to day basis especially in hot drinks etc - do your research and experiment with what is on offer!
